Dès son jeune âge la pauvreté de ses parents l'a contraint à assumer certaines responsabilités de la vie. Il travaille dans une mine de sable au Cameroun jusqu'à l'âge de 17 ans, avant de décider plus tard de prendre la route de l'aventure. Il avait alors pour objectif à cette époque, de réaliser son rêve d'enfance en devenant champion du monde de boxe afin de ne plus tirer le diable par la queue. Francis Ngannou va s'expatrier pour l'Europe en prenant le chemin du désert du Sahara, puis la mer Méditerranée. Il va à l'assaut de la mer qui continue d'engloutir tant de jeunes africains emportant avec eux leurs rêves.
