FUTSAL: CAF suspension disqualifies Cameroon from Can 2024

The seventh edition of the 2024 African Futsal Cup of Nations has been bringing together several African countries in Morocco for several days since April 11 until the 21st. Cameroon was disqualified and replaced by Mauritania.

The Confederation of African Football announced the suspension of the Cameroon national team from the seventh edition of the African Futsal Cup of Nations which has been taking place in Morocco for several days, pitting the best African teams against each other.

Indeed, Cameroon has been accused of violating rules and regulations since 2019. Faced with this situation, Cameroon did not appeal within the deadline to give its version of the facts to CAF. The team is therefore suspended and will not take part in the African futsal meeting. However, the Cameroon national team, twice African champion, was racing for a third continental title as it did in 2016 and 2018 in South Africa. The Lionesses of Cameroon were replaced by Mauritania. It is clear that, if Cameroon had appealed this suspension in time, it could obtain a cancellation or relief.

Futsal in Cameroon: Myth or reality?

Futsal exists in Cameroon and is managed by the Cameroonian Football Federation. The members of the national commission for this sport led by President Norbert Fouedjou, member of the executive committee of Fecafoot, regularly hold working sessions with a view to the development of this discipline on the ground. According to the federation, futsal is played in the departments and regions of Cameroon with the added bonus of a final for men. The last one took place in May 2023 at the gymnasium of the Yaoundé sports stadium. Women have their championship which is played in the regions and departments. Before each start of the season, the clubs are made aware by the members of the commission about the terms of affiliation, as well as the conduct to follow during the competition.

As a reminder, futsal is played in Cameroon in the departments and regions under the management of Fecafoot. Cameroon, double African champion, is disqualified for the seventh edition of Can 2024 which is being contested in Morocco, so the finalists and the third will be directly qualified for the World Cup scheduled for next September in Uzbekistan.
