“Yaoundé heart of the city” project: a mirage?

Urban mobility envisaged

Fruit of Cameroon-France cooperation through the C2D contract under the auspices of the AFD (technical and financial agent) for the benefit of the urban community of Yaoundé (project owner), this project seems to have gained momentum in the wing. Otherwise how can we understand that four years after the establishment of a technical steering committee, the machine still seems to be stuck. Reason why Ms. Célestine KetchaCourtès, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, demanded the start of work in this year 2024 during the 2nd steering committee of this program held this Tuesday, December 27, 2024 in the proceedings room of the town hall of the city.

The AFD, “arsonist firefighters”?

This is the impression that some expressed at the end of the discussions because what is the problem that things are not moving in the desired direction? No one seems to want to take responsibility for these four years of stagnation of the project. The mayor of the city Luc Messi Atangana raises the problem of the no objection notice which is an obstacle to real progress on the project. In the same vein, the Minister demanded a quarterly schedule of meetings and that the lessons learned from the C2D regional capitals project could be used to bring it to fruition. Ultimately, the capital Yaoundé will have to present a new face. This “Yaoundé Cœur de ville” project aims to improve mobility through three key crossroads, the first is the Mvan crossroads, the main starting point for interurban transport towards the Southern, Littoral and even South-West regions with the construction of a new bus station to accommodate passengers and transporters. The second crossroads is that of Elig-Effa which integrates the redevelopment of the Mokolo bus station and the third flagship project concerns the Elig-Edzoa crossroads which provides the connection between the city center and the eastern districts of the city. The project integrates the development of roads around crossroads as well as rapid impact actions intended to improve the lives of the populations of the city of seven hills.

Reaction

Mme Célestine Ketcha Courtès, Minhdu

“Making Yaoundé one of the most pleasant cities in Africa. This is 46.1 billion francs the result of cooperation between Cameroon and France. We held this second session of the steering committee to ensure and remove the blocking points in the start of this great project. At the end of the contributions and discussions with the partner AFD, I am reassured with the local technical unit which is the town hall of Yaoundé, that we are converging towards the same vision, that of doing everything possible so that this project begins this year 2024.”
