  • The Gabonese pen is present at SIILY

Reverend Jean H. TATY MAVOUNGOU speaks about the reasons for his participation. Afrique en éveil :what are the reasons for your participation in Siily? Jean H. MAVOUNGOU : I am the author of two books, the first, spiritual combat, the second is the church and wealth, I came to attend this great international book fair, firstly to participate in the sharing of knowledge, but also participate in this environment which allows people to build links, relationships, because it is the first time that I have come to participate in a show, but it allowed me to discover that there are several countries participating in it and through this show I can establish business relationships. Afrique en éveil : How is the Gabonese pen doing? Jean H. MAVOUNGOU : It is doing well like all the feathers of Central Africa. We know that Africans do not have this culture of reading, it is up to those who produce and write, because the book is a product, that we must adapt to the taste of the consumer and we know that this This is where the real difficulty of the African pen lies. More and more young people are totally detached from our culture and most of the books that we sometimes write translate our traditional realities, while our young people are no longer interested in traditional realities, it will be a question for us of ensuring that it has this mixture between tradition and the taste of youth that the book becomes more interesting and to encourage young people to read. Afrique en éveil : Does your writing have a certain diversity or is it only focused on questions of spirituality? Jean H. MAVOUNGOU : I am diverse and I would like to clarify that the management of spirituality is the basis of existence. We must know that knowledge itself is spiritual and that he who neglects the management of spirituality also neglects the management of the normalization of the city, and that is why we went to the base to explain to the men present in spiritual combat, that every human being, life itself only has meaning in spiritual combat, he who refuses to fight refuses to succeed. The day of March 8, 2024 was the choice of the managerial team of the artist Locko to celebrate his 10 years of career at the multipurpose sports palace in Yaoundé. The meeting displays a great success in its orchestration and in its communication approach which did not leave aside such a spectacle rich in colors and emotions, in full celebration of International Women's Rights Day, 2024 edition, but on the contrary, comes out with some beautiful photos. On one side a warm and massively present audience sharing the star's rich repertoire and on the other, one of the most beautiful warmth of a woman, the maternal warmth of Locko's mother, who also chose this day to address him with words full of maternal affection: “I would like to tell my son today what he never knew. During the most difficult times, during the times of annoyance, what do I do? I put on his music. I am proud of you my son”. Deep words that reminded this woman of the first day she discovered that her son was singing and that he was letting emotions escape through his vocal cords. Emotions that remained clinging to her mother's smile towards her son. It was an equally spectacular atmosphere, with the imperial entry of the artist Locko onto the stage which took place under the footsteps of Ngondo, illustrating his origins as a Sawa son, who saw the participation of a collective of young professional dancers from several cities in Cameroon (Yaoundé, Douala, Buea, Bafoussam). A production of which he is the author assisted by Adah Akenji who also covered the concert. An organization brilliantly carried out by the locomotive team with the support of the Yaoundé multipurpose sports center and the Easy Group label. In this success, the pre-event was especially remarkable with the support of several artists and media who contributed to the production of the live show of the 10-year career of the artist Locko; numerous tickets, all categories combined, were purchased by several stars of 237. • SEMBE I FACT SHEET: The impact of PMI in the fight against malaria in Cameroon

The Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé served as the setting on Wednesday March 13, 2024 for the official launch of the project “System to end the burden of Malaria through significant engagement in the Far North” (SEMBE I) by the Minister of Health public. A US Presidential Malaria Initiative (PMI) funded by the United States Agency for Development (USAID) for a period of five years and implemented by the Cameroonian Association for Social Marketing (ACMS). Cameroon is one of 11 countries that represents approximately 70% of the malaria burden and implements the “High Burden to High impact” approach ». A launching ceremony which took place in the presence of the president of the Far North regional council, the head of the PMI, the president of the board of directors of the ACMS and many other personalities who came to support this initiative. It must be said that this comes only a few days after the Yaoundé agreement resulting from the work of the international forum on malaria which has just hosted the Cameroonian capital where Cameroon's experience on the malaria vaccine for children from zero to 2 years was shared in the Soa health district. Reaction Dr Malachie Manaouda, Minsanté « We have experienced a drop of around 40% in the incidence rate of deaths due to malaria for the period 2022/2023. throughout the national territory. This still hides some disparities because there are regions which continue to be impacted such as the Far North region. For us, SEMBE I which arrives today offers the advantage to identify and put in place new means to strengthen the current capacity of actors to better do their work in the fight against malaria. It would also be to identify, determine and implement new initiatives but embed in the community In complementarity with the other means put in place by the government and the latest vaccine solution which is arriving to join the efforts already made. It is therefore a question with SEMBE I of seeing how the different actors will together monitor the implementation of all this, I believe this should give us better coordination of the activity to fight against malaria on the ground and more support from the populations from this part of the country. Overall we expect a drop in malaria in the Far North and even across the country ». Clément Noumsi

  • Mapping of the Cocoa orchard in Cameroon

A two-day workshop (March 13 and 14) was held at the La Falaise Hotel in Yaoundé as part of the European Union's Sustainable Cocoa initiative implemented by FAO in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture. forests and several other stakeholders. Today Cameroon is positioned 5th in the world among cocoa producers, in 2021 it joined the dialogue spaces as an observer before starting discussions between May 2022 and March 2023 having created its sustainable cocoa committee in November 2022 by joint decision of Minader and Mincommerce. In consultation with the private sector and public partners involved in the Cocoa value chain, Cameroon has made commitments aligned with the three pillars of the EU Sustainable Cocoa initiative which are consistent with SND30 with the axis priority production at least 6% of the world market. This project will provide reliable and up-to-date information on the situation of the cocoa orchard and its impact on forests for the monitoring and evaluation of public policies and private initiatives regarding the sustainability of the cocoa sector. It will strengthen the capacities of national actors to use remote sensing and geomatics tools for Cameroon's compliance with EU regulation on deforestation which will come into force by the end of 2024. Reactions Dr Aurelie C. Shapiro, national forest Monitoring/forestry division de la FAO « You know with the new European regulations, we must determine that cocoa plantations are not in deforested areas after 2020, so we will send the necessary tools to work with data, experts and partners to help us determine legality and the illegality of plantations. We have this very difficult aspect which is agroforestry which is a cocoa plantation mixed with trees. This is a big challenge that we hope to achieve with new artificial intelligence methods, new satellite data to allow us to map where this Cocoa orchard is and its entry into the legal framework of the European Union. We must use slightly more innovative methods which have never been tested on this scale, we will use machine learning algorithms and technical resources to try to map Cameroonian Cocoa ». Dr Narcisse Ghislain Olinga, deputy director of commercial exchanges at Mincommerce « As you know, the European Union has published a number of processes on deforestation which aim to only allow cocoa that enters the European Union market not to come from deforested areas after 2020. For this we comes down to putting certain devices in place to demonstrate that our Cocoa complies with the required provisions. Today's workshop allows us to develop a map of Cameroonian orchards and forests which will allow us to demonstrate to our European partners that our Cocoa does not come from deforested areas and which has environmental virtues, this requires an ecological practice bonus ». Philippe MAYAUX, Minister Advisor Team Leader Environment, Agriculture, Climate Change and EU Energy Cooperation « It is to have good quality cocoa that can integrate into the European commercial market because it is in our interest. The European Union wants good relations with Cameroonian cocoa. This workshop is very important because it will allow us to know exactly where it is grown. For us the key message is to show that cocoa cultivation and biodiversity are compatible. We need the state of play, where good practices are located ». Clément Noumsi

  • Mintss: signing of the Feicom company collective agreement

The conference room of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security served as the setting this Tuesday, March 12, 2024, for the signing of the company collective agreement between the employer group, staff representatives accompanied by the national president of senior and executive employees banks and financial establishments of Cameroon Isaac Bissala and the government represented by the Ministry of Labor. It is a happy outcome of 16 months of struggle in a spirit of tolerance and patience without the need for strike action or the sound of boots. This is proof of the parties' desire to reach a consensus after so much effort and self-sacrifice. For a 1st category public company, it is a question of adhering to the law in order to allow its staff to better enjoy their rights governed by the law. “I congratulate the president of the joint commission for the work done during these 16 months of negotiations” indicated the general director of Feicom in his speech, specifying that “Feicom is the goose that lays the golden eggs which must be respected the rhythm of the laying, hence our patience and our high sense of respect for institutions”. He specifies that this is the 5th revaluation in 18 years overall is the following, office workers increase of more than 33%, supervisors 31% and executives 19%, general management is committed to maintaining dialogue social, to take into account its human capital and remain a transmission belt between the organization and the government. For the Minister of Labor and Social Security Grégoire Owona, this is proof that social dialogue is a reality in our country even if the pace is slow, “it is long-term work and it is necessary that the appetites employees do not exceed what can be granted to them, it is not an easy task but oh so exciting” indicated the minister. Reaction Philippe Camille Akoa, DG du Feicom « In 2012, Feicom concluded a company agreement between general management and its staff which provides a certain number of benefits improving the living conditions of staff. As soon as it is signed, a review is planned every 3 years, today we are at the 3rd revision of this collective agreement which has also improved the living conditions of employees, it must also be said that this brings an improvement of 5% and many other advantages taking into account the increase in fuel costs for transport. There are also allowances for the staff of the general management and those of the agencies, what the DG would like to say precisely is that Feicom has staff who are competent, it constitutes, as we call it, the human capital of our company and it is thanks to it that the general management has the results that we know there. The government regularly congratulates us and the CTDs have this recognition. For us, this revision certainly does not resolve everything as the minister indicated, there are always demands, for the general management and all the staff, this new commitment is still a recognition at the level of the state so we promise after the signing of this document to continue working as the minister said, there was no strike, no marches and we will continue negotiations for other benefits with the aim to always recognize the efforts of each other. The gate will now be closed at 7:20 a.m. so that work can begin at 7:30 a.m., that’s also discipline». Clément Noumsi

  • Rice production: South Korea, determined to further support Cameroon

A delegation from this Asian country has just been received at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to discuss the initiatives to be put in place to boost its production of this cereal. In Cameroon, rice and frozen fish are the main imported food products. According to the National Institute of Statistics, national rice production is estimated at around 220,000 tonnes against a demand of around 757,000 tonnes. That is a gap to be filled by imports of more than 500,000 tonnes per year. This situation, far from improving, is on the contrary getting worse over time to such an extent that we remember that during a meeting in July 2023, the Minister of Commerce Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana called on importers to import 150,000 tonnes of rice to meet demand for the second half of the above-mentioned year. However, the situation is not desperate because the country can count on its Korean friends. It is therefore at this level that the audience that the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe, has just granted to a delegation from the Korea Rural Community Corporation led by its president Lee Byung-Ho in the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cameroon Jonghan Kim finds its relevance. With rice production on the agenda. The Korean partner intends to support Cameroon in the implementation of mechanisms enabling it to boost its rice production and in turn reduce imports and fight against food insecurity. For this, a project was set up with around ten other countries on the black continent. This initiative, according to the operational staff, is part of the third phase of the irrigated rice pilot farm project. “South Korea forty years ago was a country lacking rice. But through seed improvement, mechanization and training of professionals, we were able to increase rice production to become a self-reliant country,” said Lee Byung-Ho. “Cameroon wants to learn from their experience since we are in cooperation with Korea to be able to boost rice production. As part of this African rice belt project, we have benefited from the increase in the Avangane production farm in upper Sanaga which will allow us to produce not only 2,000 tonnes of seeds each year, but also carry out training. of personnel in terms of mastery of irrigation techniques and mechanization in production", will indicate for its part Minader Julien Efila

  • Lady Tsemo case against James Gabriel Mouangue Kobila, president of the CDH

Dame Tsemo dismissed and sentenced to court Ruling on the matter of summary proceedings from hour to hour this March 12 on the request for discontinuance of the disciplinary procedure then underway against her within the Commission of Human Rights of Cameroon (CDHC), the Court of First Instance of Yaoundé administrative center has just rejected his request by declaring itself "incompetent for serious challenge". In addition, the judge “ordered the plaintiff to pay the costs”. This is the second failure of Ms. Tsemo in the senseless standoff that she freely chose to undertake to try to impose her mode of operation on the national human rights institution of Cameroon, after the rejection of the notification of his summary procedure by the disciplinary council which immediately recommended his dismissal. A dismissal recorded on February 28, 2024 by President James Mouangue Kobila. Refusing to take responsibility for her escapades before the disciplinary council where she never showed up despite three summons and advised by Sunday lawyers, Ms. Espérance Tsemo Kouobou hoped to paralyze the disciplinary council of the CDHC and continue to receive her salary without work until the outcome of the criminal case improperly brought against the president of the CDHC, on the basis of low-level slander. Indeed, during its session of February 27, 2024, unanimously on each of the five charges brought against her, the disciplinary council of the CDHC recommended to the president of this INDH to dismiss Ms. Tsemo Kouobou. An outcome that she wanted to avoid at all costs by scouring the courts of Yaoundé in all directions for two months. After this second bitter failure, Ms. Tsemo Kouobouboum is certainly already meditating on the meaning of the adverbial phrase never two without three. Clément Noumsi

  • Cocoa: Why is the Cameroonian market now on the roof of the world?

Buoyant international context and sustained and recognized recovery in the quality of Cameroonian brown gold. These are among other reasons for the improvement observed recently with a record price per kilogram of beans at 4,225 CFA francs. Cameroonian cocoa “now on the roof of the world”. During a group sale organized by the Minister of Commerce, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, in Abong-Mbang in the production basin of the Eastern region of Cameroon, on March 5, 2024, the kilogram of beans reached the price record of 4225 CFA francs. A price never equaled at the national and global level which, according to a press release from the head of Commerce dated March 6, 2024, is justified not only by the buoyant international context. But also by the sustained and recognized recovery in the quality of the Cameroonian bean throughout the 2023-2024 campaign. Indeed, apart from the quality of the Cameroonian bean which continues to improve thanks to the awareness-raising work among producers carried out by the Ministry of Commerce in favor of good farming practices, it must also be recognized that the improvement observed on the Cameroonian market is justified by the international context marked by forecasts of a drop in production in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the two leading world producers. This is due to the aging of plantations and climate change. These forecasts according to ICCO should result in an 11% drop in global production in 2023-2024 to 4.45 million tonnes. Which should lead according to “Investing in Cameroon” to a market deficit of 374,000 tonnes by September 2024, compared to only 74,000 tonnes recorded during the 2022-2023 cocoa season.. Records broken at international level It is therefore clear that it is this unfavorable international context which then contributed to the explosion in prices which results in producing countries like Cameroon in better remuneration of producers like what has just happened in Abong-Mbang. Indeed, explains the “Ecofin” agency, “since the start of 2024, cocoa is the raw material that has performed the best on the markets, gaining 56.4%. Or more than $2,300 per ton year-on-year. This, after breaking at the beginning of February the record of 5,379 dating back to July 197. The prices of the reference cocoa contract for delivery in March to the Intecontinental Exchange in New York crossed the 6,000 dollar mark and reached a daily high of $6,929. On February 26, 2024, prices closed at $6,884 per ton. Overall, this is a breakthrough for brown gold, which only a year earlier was trading at $2,668 per tonne. However, beyond the quality of the bean and a favorable context, the Cameroonian producer benefits from the group sales strategy initiated by the Ministry of Commerce. A strategy which allows producers to set their minimum prices and buyers to compete to offer the best in order to grab all the available stock. Ultimately, the improvement observed on the national market can also be explained by strong demand. Indeed, for some time, apart from exporters, the Cameroonian market has seen the arrival in less than three years of new local processors like Neo-industry, Africa Processing and Atlantic Cocoa.
